Edmond Beautiful asks local residents to relive the beauty of summer this weekend through its annual Yard of the Week program. The nonprofit organization is sponsoring a free tour of the 2009 Yard of the Week winners. Maps are available at Farmers Grain Co., 102 W. First St.
The weekly summer program runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day and is co-sponsored by The Edmond Sun, the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce and Home Depot. Each week, the winning home is featured with the Yard of the Week sign in the front yard, which was donated this year by Vital Signs of Edmond. Each winner is also featured in The Edmond Sun’s Friday Home & Garden section and receives a free, six-month subscription to The Sun. Winners also receive a $50 store credit with Home Depot. The chamber accepts nominations each week during the program and Edmond Beautiful chooses the winners.
This Saturday and Sunday, residents are invited to drive by on a free tour to enjoy the fall beauty of this year’s winning yards. The winners homes and yards cover a broad spectrum, from homes built in the midst of the Great Depression to some built just last year. Some winning homes are small at 1,100 square feet while others are very large, wrote Dan O’Neil, former mayor and Edmond Beautiful member.
“All residents whose yards were selected have a passion for flowers and beautiful landscaping and all routinely work long hours in their gardens,” O’Neil wrote.
