Cranberry: Fruit with a legacy

How many types of berries can you name? Of all fruits, only three — the blueberry, the Concord grape and the cranberry — can trace their roots to North American soil. The cranberry has helped to sustain Americans for hundreds of years. Native Americans used cranberries in a variety of foods. The most popular was pemmican — a high-protein combination of crushed cranberries, dried deer meat and melted fat.

Fall leaf piles not all fun and games

Just try to tell me that the sight of a multi-colored pile of freshly raked leaves doesn’t nudge you toward the urge of belly-flopping right into the middle of that organic pile of fun. This was always something I looked forward to as a child, but I fear that few children get to make these same memories as our cities begin to fill up and creep out.

Fall color in an evergreen?

Homeowners may be beginning to wonder why their evergreens resemble a palette of fall color. Many pines and arborvitaes are exhibiting shades of brown and yellow in their needles. With all of the other pine problems running rampant, this may be alarming, but there is no need to start tree shopping just yet.

Plant swap gone bad

It’s been said in this column and many others that one of the many joys of gardening is being able to share plants with friends. Sharing divisions is a great way to increase the diversity of plants in the garden without increasing the pressure on your pocketbook. But I do have some words of caution before you start introducing new plants into the yard.

Don’t get burned when buying firewood

The day the firewood gets delivered at my house is almost as magical as Christmas morning. There is nothing as relaxing as coming home in the dead of winter to sit in front of the fire. I look forward to this all year. Some may think that a person who sits on the hearth until her back just can’t take the heat anymore is crazy, but I suppose most gardeners are.

Fall temps signal time to bring plants indoors

I’ve always thought that the real gardeners are the people who are able to bring a full sun-loving plant indoors for the winter and keep it alive and thriving. When the spring bulbs pop their heads above ground and the birds begin to sing, the plants are again moved outdoors for their summer vacations. The lush foliage seems to never miss a beat.
