Riders learn motorcycle safety

EDMOND — Edmond Police officers, Oklahoma County sheriff's deputies and Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers taught a free civilian motorcycle safety class Saturday at the Edmond Fire Department's training facility.

Riders from Edmond, Oklahoma City, Yukon and Guthrie were among the 31 participants, said Edmond Police Officer Randy Payne. Another 25 were on a waiting list, Payne said.

Safety is a premium consideration for riders of 600-pound motorcycles competing for space with 3,000-pound vehicles, instructors said.

The six-hour class is paid by the city. In 2006, Edmond became the first city in the state to offer civilian survival training for the experienced rider.
