Band students pound the turf
During the dog days of summer, most people retreat indoors seeking air-conditioned coolness, but not the musicians in Edmondï¿?s high school bands.
Memorial band members kicked off the high school summer band camps July 30, followed by Santa Fe and North. As band members swarmed the football fields for two weeks of practice starting early and ending late, they moved indoors only when the skies were heavy with rain.
Band members stepped up to learn half-time performances and practice for the yearly Oklahoma Bandmasters Association contest, where Memorial placed third and Santa Fe placed sixth last year.
In addition to practicing, band members participated in team and spirit-building activities from painted faces to wearing tutus.
Santa Fe High Schoolï¿?s band members had an additional incentive as they also will be marching in Londonï¿?s New Yearï¿?s Parade for the second year.
Students earn a physical education credit for band, a class that requires athleticism, coordination, concentration and mental toughness as they practice daily during the year.
