Reader urges support for Rice
The Edmond Sun
EDMOND —
To the Editor:
Our presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama, are both stressing the need for change in our country as they campaign for the upcoming election in November. I know of hardly anyone who disagrees with them — all of us are recognizing that we are desperately in need of change.
But neither of these candidates will be able to accomplish that goal if he is forced to work with the same senators and representatives that have put us in the mess in which we are today.
I am excited that we Oklahomans have an opportunity this November to help make possible the change that is so badly needed. Our current senator, Jim Inhofe, who is running for re-election, has been in Washington for 22 years, and has been a politician for 40 years. He has voted to give billions in tax breaks to oil companies and supports tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. More than 20 times he has voted against raising the minimum wage. It’s time for a change!
We are fortunate to have Andrew Rice, a current Oklahoma state senator from District 46, now running against Inhofe for the office of U.S. senator from Oklahoma.
Rice was born in Oklahoma City in 1973. He was graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, with a bachelor’s degree, and from Harvard University Divinity School with a master’s in theological studies in 1999. He has traveled and worked in Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
Rice’s older brother, David Rice, was killed in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and due to that tragedy, Andrew decided to rededicate his career to social justice work and political reforms. His record as a member of the Oklahoma Senate is proof that his decision is bearing fruit.
What better person could we elect to serve us as U.S. senator in this crucial time when change is so desperately needed! I hope you will join me in voting for Rice for U.S. senator.
