Does downtown need saving?

To the Editor:Last weekend, even without an Edmond Public Safety building and parking garage and even without a Second Street pedestrian bridge to a parking lot, some 75,000 people, including many out-of-towners still managed to attend the Downtown Edmond Arts Festival.

Report cites factory farms’ toll

Earlier this week, the prestigious Pew Charitable Trusts and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that factory farming takes a big toll on human health and the environment, undermines rural economic stability, and fails to provide humane treatment of livestock. Capping a two-year study, with agriculture industry participation, the report calls for a national phase-out of all intensive confinement of farmed animals.

Hepner’s tax logic not on target

Mickey Hepner’s views of paying tax on tax does not convince me. He claimed the IRS said the American taxpayer will spend an average of 26.4 hours and $207 to complete and file their tax return. Later on he says 26.4 hours times $17.92 per hour plus the $270 would equate to $680.09 to file a tax return.

Letter writer responds to single mother fracas

Mothers who are divorced are not “single mothers,” they are divorced mothers. Widows are not “single mothers,” they are widowed mothers. Mothers who are living alone because their husbands have abandoned them are not “single mothers.” Single mothers are those who have children out of wedlock, thus single.

Single mothers come from many circumstances

To the Editor: What a sad man Robert Baker (Letters, April 10) must be. He finds it necessary to take on both single mothers and a local ministry attempting to help these often well-deserving women. And the language he chooses to use: “deeply offended,” “glorify,” “sin,” “immoral,” and, whatever this phrase must mean, “living against social laws.”
