Reader: More education available about U.N.

New Castle (Pa.) — To the Editor:

With regard to the ruckus at the recent Sustainability Forum, I would like to offer an assurance that the United Nations does not have any aspirations to control or take over the City of Edmond.

The United Nations is a convenor of nations and international non-governmental organizations. Dozens of specialized agencies are part of the U.N. family. Generally speaking, U.N. agencies are set up for the purpose of research, observation, reporting, discussion, consensus-building, promotion and advocacy.  Beyond that, the U.N. really has very limited authority to enforce or control the behavior of nations. Even so, the U.N. will frequently be mentioned any time there is a discussion of global health, the natural environment, climate, sustainable development, etc.

I've lived in Oklahoma all my life, and I know that many of my neighbors have a limited understanding of what the U.N. does. As a result, Oklahomans are at high risk of falling victim to any number of hoaxes, rumors and scams regarding the United Nations. (See www.una-okc.org/scams )

If any resident of Edmond or any city official or business leader seeks to learn more about the United Nations, you are invited to visit the Web site of the Greater Oklahoma City chapter of the United Nations Association at www.una-okc.org.

The U.N. Association is a grassroots organization that seeks to educate the public about the mission and purpose of the United Nations. Additionally, we promote U.S. leadership of the U.N. through multi-lateral engagement on an array of global issues.

Like many fellow citizens of Edmond, I have observed the strenuous campaign for District 41 state Senate seat between Paul Blair and Clark Jolley. During my 24 years in Edmond, I can’t recall the level of effort and money spent for a state Senate seat.

  • Who’s responsible, the Old or the New?

Oklahoma is saddled with many fiscal challenges this year. One such challenge is the needed repairs to the Capitol building.

A level playing field in Edmond may never be the same after the workshop at the City Council Chambers April 10 at high noon. The medicine men sold the audience on how wonderful the new complex will be at the corner of Interstate 35 and Covell.
