To the Editor:
On Feb. 14, Edmond school patrons of District 2 will vote to select a school board member for Edmond Public Schools. This District 2 seat will be a five-year term. The responsibilities of a school board member are mainly two-fold: 1) Select and hire a superintendent or terminate his contract when appropriate; and 2) Develop and implement board policies that are in the best interests of Edmond students and school staff.
It should be noted that a board member has no authority to act in any capacity representative of the school unless he/she is seated at an official, designated school board meeting. The superintendent is charged by the school board to be the Chief Executive Officer and is solely responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school system. No board member should attempt to micromanage or interfere with the daily business of the school system.
Steve Roy is the only candidate who understands and will follow the appropriate roles of a school board member. I believe the incumbent District 2 school board member has lost sight of her role as an effective member of the board.
On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, it is time for a change to improve the effectiveness of our school board. One mission, one focus, harmony and cooperation are essential elements that should be characteristic of a properly functioning school board.
Please cast your vote for Steve Roy for District 2 school board member on Feb. 14.
CHARLES WOODHAM is a former member of the Edmond Board of Education, serving one term from 2006-11.
