Jesus statue deserves support

To the Editor:

I’ve read several stories about the statue for The Sacred Heart Catholic Gift Store. Every business was going to have something that fit in with their store! What do you people want her to have — a 6-foot cigar store Indian statue? That way the world visiting downtown would think they sold cigars instead of bibles and crosses?

The statue is beautiful, Karen (Morton) is beautiful and all (those opposed) should leave them alone. Thank you to June Cartwright for having good taste and being another beautiful person.

I worked in downtown Edmond for 20 years and I say if you can have “Ham & Eggs” (a bronze statue of a pig and a chicken) in front of a restaurant, you should have Jesus in front of a Christian gift shop.

Separating so many things is what’s wrong with all the hate in the world. For God’s sake, and for our children’s sake, leave it alone.

You people who think this statue doesn’t fit into your theme and with the other statues should take a really good look at the fat frog on the corner (of First and Littler) with a crown on. Jesus wore a crown, too, and He is much more forgiving than I am.

I say to Karen Morton: “You go girl!” Stick to your guns and if you need more bullets, call me.

Helen Jackson

Letters to the Editor
  • Reader will stick with Republican nominee

    To the Editor:
Tuesday morning, I dropped my children off at school and made my way to the place where I am registered to vote. As I was driving, I was listening to Mullins in the Morning on KTOK. People were calling in and telling Reid how they had cast their vote in the runoff election. One of the callers, a man, had said that he had voted for Kevin Calvey (in the 5th District congressional race for the Republican nomination), but that he would vote Democrat if James Lankford got elected.

  • Reader: Campaign letter delves into Logan Medical Center controversy

    To the Editor:
As a citizen of Logan County and a former trustee of Logan Medical Center, I’ve been watching the events between County Commissioners and select Hospital Authority members play out with disappointment and great concern.

  • Reader: Charitable rules sometimes confuse, stymie good intentions

    To the Editor:
Most schools in the area are revving up for the first day of classes this month. Lots of retail shops are offering back-to-school sales and office supply stores are drastically slashing prices.

  • Reader: Equestrians seek trail addition at Arcadia Lake

    To the Editor:
In 2007, Arcadia Lake flooded due to spring rains, and trash that was thrown into the Deep Fork River created a landfill on the equestrian trails. While the other areas of the park were cleaned, the equestrian trails were not and the City of Edmond didn’t have the manpower or resources to clean it up. The Friends of Arcadia Lake Equestrian Trails was born and equestrians joined together to pick up the trash that was destroying the natural environment and beauty of the land.

  • Reader: Debasing language does not belong in state Constitution

    To the Editor:
As an Oklahoma Christian who is writing a thesis on Middle Eastern alliances and who is keenly aware of the concepts behind Sharia law, I have to say that Rep. Rex Duncan could not be more wrong when he says that, “reaction to the proposal has been entirely positive.” (“Sharia law, courts likely on ballot,” June 5, 2010, The Edmond Sun)
This is nothing more than a bigoted resolution. I find it appalling how the Oklahoma state Legislature finds it necessary to put forth an unnecessary question to the citizens of this state. What has not been told to the people of Oklahoma is that if approved this language will be a permanent fixture of our state Constitution.

  • Reader: Edmond senators vote to harass and intimidate women

    To the Editor:
Edmond senators set aside being good stewards of taxpayer money as they voted to harass and intimidate women. Twenty-five Republicans and eight Democrats voted to overturn the governor’s veto of HB 3284, the Statistical Abortion Reporting Act. Not voting to override the governor’s veto, Oklahoma women senators opposed the Oklahoma legislative control of women’s bodies.
Sen. Clark Jolley, R-Edmond, and Sen. Todd Lamb, R-Edmond and candidate for state lieutenant governor, voted for HB 3284 and both voted to overturn the governor’s veto.

  • Reader: Fox Lake soap opera needs conclusion

    To the Editor:
The headline on May 25th’s Edmond Sun, “Edmond City Council: Fox Lake must get green,” sparked my interest. I thought that perhaps this saga was over and that the developer, Frank Battle, would finally make good on his promise.

  • Reader: 1781 not 1787

    To the Editor:
In the first installment of a series exploring the historical meaning of the U.S. Constitution (Opinion, Saturday, May 22, 2010, The Edmond Sun ) Don Powers writes in his first paragraph: “The work of hammering out a written Constitution took until Sept. 17, a month before British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Va., ending the War for Independence.”

  • 5-20 Letters: your view

    To the Editor:
As community relations manager for the Oklahoma City Thunder, I am writing to sing the praises of some Edmond Public Schools students. During the 2009-2010 Thunder regular season, the team was not only busy doing great things on the court, but it also was busy doing great things in the community.

  • Resident thanks policeman, firemen for kindness

    To the Editor:
Recently, after dining out with a friend, we were on the way home when I noticed smoke coming from under the hood of my car. When I stopped and raised the hood, it burst in to flames.
