Team salutes veterans

EDMOND — To the Editor:

Another Memorial Day is approaching, a time to remember all military veterans. I note almost daily as I read through the obituaries the number of veterans who are leaving us. There seems to be more lately.

I would like to remind readers that I continue to be a volunteer ambassador for the U.S. Army’s Freedom Team Salute program. This is a free outreach program to thank all U.S. Army veterans for their service to our country. Let’s honor the Army veterans in our lives now while we still can. Army veterans will receive an official commendation package from the Secretary of the Army and Army Chief of Staff that includes a personalized letter of thanks and certificate of appreciation, an Army lapel pin and two U.S. Army decals.

All I need is the name of the honorably discharged Army veteran (active, Army Guard or Army Reserve) and address. You also may include rank if known, but it is not required. Please send the information to my e-mail address at bhill87702@-aol.com or, if you prefer, call me at 330-0739, no collect calls please. You can also go to www.freedomteamsalute.com to honor your Army veteran today. This free commendation package will arrive within three to four weeks.

Let’s thank our U.S. Army veterans now while we can.

Happy Memorial Day.

Letters to the Editor
  • Dog dumping problem needs attention

    To the Editor:
I must admit, the new animal shelter facility in Edmond is beautiful. Our tax dollars were well spent. I have been there on two occasions and though the building is nice, the personnel and “rules” were not.

  • Small Business of Year says thank you

    To the Editor:
Thank you Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce and Bank of Oklahoma for selecting Powers at Law LLC as the 2009 Small Business of the Year.

  • Resident: Walkers just as important as drivers

    To the Editor:
I walk, for exercise, and to run errands instead of driving to avoid pollution. During and following this winter’s snowstorms I have found my way blocked on public sidewalks by large piles of snow pushed from parking lots at businesses, churches, schools and an Edmond fire station.

  • Miller responds to Busey column

    To the Editor:
Unfortunately, I must respond to Phil Busey Sr.’s editorial comments (“Bold reform means a brighter future for education,” Friday, Jan. 21, 2010, The Edmond Sun). As a teacher, I appreciate all well-intended and informed advocates for education. However, for someone who fashions himself as an education expert, Busey would do well to do his homework.

  • Longtime resident advocates for market parking

    To the Editor:
I am 70 years old and lived in Edmond all of those years. I have seen a small town grow to a large city. I think the city and its citizens should live up to two very important priorities.

  • Death penalty stance saddens reader

    To the Editor:
I was both saddened and disappointed to read that Sen. Todd Lamb opposes the repeal of the death penalty in Oklahoma.

  • Reader: Deer Creek dishonors King’s memory

    To the Editor:
An open letter to the Deer Creek School Board and Superintendent Rebecca Wilkinson:
You have chosen to dishonor Martin Luther King Jr. by using his national and state recognized holiday as a snow day.

  • Reader: Show me the money, results

    To the Editor:
In today’s mail I received a letter from Readers Digest Prize Council and also received The Edmond Sun. Both had exciting potential life-changing gains. The Prize Council says I can win money, the City Council tells me I can see less traffic congestion, save money in gasoline cost and the city staff could work more efficiently.

  • Reader: Murphey plan unfair to tag agency owners

    To the Editor:
Although I appreciate Rep. Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, and his efforts to streamline state government on your Opinion Page (“Modernization changes taking effect,” The Edmond Sun, Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010) his attempt to mandate the Oklahoma Tax Commission provide online motor vehicle registration renewals cannot achieve his goal, and is a step backward, not forward.

  • What changed Hepner’s mind?

    To the Editor:

Mickey Hepner, in a Sun Opinion article on Jan. 2, 2006, you wrote “… our large budget deficits threaten our long-term economic security.
