EDMOND — Murphey plan unfair to tag agency owners
To the Editor:
Although I appreciate Rep. Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie, and his efforts to streamline state government on your Opinion Page (“Modernization changes taking effect,” The Edmond Sun, Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010) his attempt to mandate the Oklahoma Tax Commission provide online motor vehicle registration renewals cannot achieve his goal, and is a step backward, not forward.
Oklahoma tag agencies have been providing online registration renewals and other online services for the past 10 years without additional cost to state government. The Oklahoma Tax Commission will not have the capability to process motor vehicle registration renewals as efficiently as our privately owned, small businesses, throughout the State of Oklahoma in small and large communities without additional cost provided by state government.
Oklahoma tag agencies have provided this service to our customers in Oklahoma, those serving in our military, and citizens located temporarily in other states and countries. To restrict us from the ability to continue providing our services at no additional cost to taxpayers is unfair.
