To the Editor:
Kathleen Duncan serves tirelessly in her capacity as an Edmond Board of Education member. A former teacher, school counselor and Oklahoma County Assistant District Attorney, she has the time to go into our schools and hear the needs of teachers, students and staff. When she hears of needs, she has the time and experience to share those issues with the appropriate administrators for investigation and resolution.
Duncan uses her keen legal mind to carefully review school contracts to make sure the school district is protected from as much liability as possible before she votes to approve these contracts.
Duncan is always looking out for the best interests of our Edmond students. She helped develop an anti-bullying policy to protect our children from the devastating effects of school bullying incidents. She encourages school programs to address the dangers our students face every day, such as texting and driving, drinking and driving, drug abuse, suicide and depression. She researches school board issues to be able to make informed decisions that are in the best interests of the students. She promotes educational opportunities for our students, such as full-day kindergarten, more AP classes, interesting elective courses, science fairs, inspirational speakers in every subject and technology upgrades such as Smart Boards in every classroom.
Duncan is known for her open door policy for her constituents in which everyone is welcome to contact her about school issues with the knowledge that what they say is kept confidential. She listens to their concerns and does her best to direct them to the appropriate district office for help.
For 46 years, I have known, admired and respected Duncan for her integrity, values, work ethic and concern for others. I know of no one with a greater sense of honor and purpose.
I am thankful for Edmond School Board member Kathleen Duncan, who gives so much of herself to the Edmond community. On Feb. 14, let’s get out and vote to make sure that Kathleen continues to represent Edmond students, parents and taxpayers!
