Meet the Boomers!

Sun debuts new publication today

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND Look inside today’s Edmond Sun for a new take on what it means to be a “senior citizen.”

“Meet the Boomers!” is The Sun’s new monthly publication aimed at the baby boomer generation.

“We decided to take our monthly supplement formerly known as ‘Seniors’ and change the premise to reflect more baby boomers, which is a core readership audience of our newspaper,” said Steve Paterson, Edmond Sun publisher.

“Just like your dad’s Oldsmobile, the boomer generation is not like their parents,” Paterson said, “and they do not perceive themselves as they move into their 60s as senior citizens. That’s their parents.”

The purpose of “Boomers!” is to cater to the informational needs of baby boomers, the publisher said.

A look at the cover of this first issue should immediately resonate with this generation. The cover is a parody of the “With The Beatles” album. Designer and Composing Manager Mark Gililland said this will be a trend for each month’s cover design.

“Each month will be a parody of album covers since boomers were the generation that had albums, or the cover might be images that were popular during this generation,” Gililland said.

Features of the monthly supplement include tips on investing, collectibles and antiques, travel and issues faced by boomers. For example, February’s issue will examine the topic of hair and its many lengths from the boomers’ youth to the present.

“Boomers!” may be found inserted into The Edmond Sun once a month. Additional copies may be purchased at The Sun’s office at 123 S. Broadway.
