Descendants of Russell Dougherty and several Edmond World War II veterans were among the first to glimpse the unveiled statue honoring Dougherty and all WW II veterans.
Following Saturday’s LibertyFest Parade and a brief program at Russell Dougherty Elementary School, dignitaries unveiled “Dawn of Hope,” a statue depicting Dougherty in his pilot gear.
It was unveiled by Edmond sculptor Mary Lou Gresham, Edmond Mayor Patrice Douglas, David Goin, superintendent of Edmond Public Schools, Paula Stafford, Russell Dougherty Elementary principal, and retired Lt. Col. Chris Dougherty.
After Jim Bowlin, Edmond Parks and Recreation Department director, welcomed the guests, Curt Munson, chairman of the Edmond Parks Foundation board of directors, and Drew Edmondson, Oklahoma attorney general, delivered speeches.
Guests gave the WW II veterans attending the program a standing ovation.
