School board hires administrators, teachers

EDMOND — The Edmond School Board approved the employment of a principal, an assistant principal and about 30 new teachers at a meeting Thursday.

Kelly Faught was approved as the new principal for Charles Haskell Elementary. She previously was the assistant principal at Angie Debo Elementary.

“Her outreach to the community is reflected in her work at Angie Debo Elementary in establishing a Student Council and Ambassador program that has been recognized twice by the American Red Cross for its service projects,” said Lynne Rowley, EPS executive director of elementary education.

Faught is a National Board Certified teacher and plans to begin studying for a doctoral degree in school administration in August at Oklahoma State University.

Board members also approved Rachel Gonzalez as a new assistant principal at Edmond North High School. She has been the assistant principal for Capitol Hill High School for the past two years. Gonzalez also has taught for Moore Public Schools.

Christa Ellis was approved for the new position of administrative intern at John Ross Elementary. Ellis has taught as fourth- and fifth-grade teacher in Edmond Public Schools for five years.

“We are pleased to have Christa bring her knowledge about teaching and the school community to the administrative team at John Ross,” Rowley said.

The board also approved the use of $600,000 from MAPS funds for construction on the Edmond Memorial High School auditorium. Bret Towne, associate superintendent for district operations, said in order to use the funds, the school must have at least one student that lives in Oklahoma City. He said Memorial currently has 491 students living in Oklahoma City.

According to The Edmond Sun archives, the project will include paving the way for extending the lobby area of the auditorium, adding a concession stand and ticket booths and providing a canopy to cover two entrances.

Towne said the original projected cost of the project was $3.5 million, which has now increased to $4.9 million. He said they will use leftover bond money and MAPS money to close the funding gap.
