4-H club plans annual Safety Fair
Edmond 4-H club is hosting the Annual Safety Fair at the OSU Extension office from noon to 4 p.m., Sept. 13. Lauren Nelson will be there to talk about Internet safety and children. Information booths representing OG&E, police, fire services, shooting sport safety, bike and runner safety plus other booths will be set up. There will be a booth for 4-H information for anyone interested in joining. Edmond resident wins on Lottery Game Show
Heather Smith of Edmond recently won $600 in cash as a contestant on “The Oklahoma Lottery Game Show,” which aired Aug. 16.
Smith purchased her winning entry ticket at EZ Stop & Go at 1429 Santa Fe Ave. in Edmond.
Each 30-minute episode of “The Oklahoma Lottery Game Show” features seven contestants (six new contestants and one returning champion) in a series of number-themed games. All players are guaranteed $500, and may have a chance to win more than $50,000 in cash and prizes in each show.
All contestants receive “star” treatment, including accommodations at the Sheraton Oklahoma City Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City, dinner for the contestant and a guest, and breakfast in the Aria Grill at the hotel.
The Game Show airs at 6 p.m. Saturdays on KOCB Channel 34 in Oklahoma City. It re-airs on Cox Channel 7 Mondays at 2 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Net proceeds of all lottery games are used to support improvements and enhancements for Oklahoma education. More than $215 million has been contributed to education since November 2005.
Hunters, anglers, sportsmen pay tribute to veterans
An Oklahoma-based paralyzed veterans organization is receiving a lot of attention lately and it’s coming from Oklahoma’s sportsmen and women. Hunters and anglers in Oklahoma are reaching out to raise awareness and much-needed revenue for Oklahoma’s Mid-America Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
“The MAPVA is comprised men and women who advocate for disabled veterans (many of whom are disabled veterans themselves) throughout the state and hunters and anglers appreciate the sacrifice these incredible men and women,” said Ron Black, founder of WILD Oklahoma — an Oklahoma based hunting and fishing television and radio program. “Without our men and women in the military, we wouldn’t have our right to keep and bear arms, nor would we be able to participate in the outdoors activities we so love — it’s time for us to pay tribute to them.”
The PVA Celebration is slated for 4 p.m. today at the Del City VFW Hall and will feature food, beverages, face painting for children, live auction items ranging from a Buster Boat to guided hunts to a trip to Las Vegas and door prizes.
Proceeds from the event go directly to the Mid-America Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and benefit Oklahoma veterans and members of the MAPVA exclusively.
More outdoor warning devices to be installed
Edmond’s Emergency Management Department has ordered 10 new outdoor warning devices that will be installed in the next few weeks. Installing the devices is phase two of a three phase plan to replace older units and install additional devices. The new devices fill gaps and expand coverage throughout the city.
Last spring, new controller software for the warning system was installed. The software makes the system easier to maintain and easier to activate remotely. Twelve new devices also were installed in the first phase of the three-year, $500,000 project. In the third year, an additional nine new devices will be installed.
Emergency managers emphasize that the outdoor warning devices are not designed or intended for in-building coverage and they may not be heard when residents are inside their homes. Even though the new devices project farther, they may not warn residents who are indoors.
EMHS orchestra sponsors car wash
The Edmond Memorial High School Orchestra will be holding a car wash from 4-6 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Mardel’s on the corner of 33rd Street and Boulevard. The car wash is free, however, donations are welcome. Proceeds from the car wash will be used toward a spring trip to Washington, D.C.
NARFE to meet Tuesday
The Edmond Chapter of the National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Gaylord University Center on the campus of Oklahoma Christian University of Science & Arts, 2501 E. Memorial Road.
The meeting is open to any current or retired federal employee or spouse and meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Lunch cost is $7.50. NARFE is the only association dedicated to protecting the earnaed retirement benefits of federal employees and retirees.
City announces new emergency notification system
Edmond’s Emergency Management and Central Communications departments have implemented a new Emergency Notification System, CodeRED, that will call residents and businesses when crucial information needs to be dispersed throughout the Edmond community.
The CodeRED system allows Edmond residents and businesses to sign up via edmondok.com and enter contact phone numbers.
The system can deliver a recorded message to 60,000 residents and businesses in an hour and it can target specific geographic areas.

Enrollment opens for The Kids’ Place 2008-09 sessions
Families who are experiencing mourning after the death of a loved one can now enroll for The Kids’ Place 2008-09 sessions. The Kids’ Place of Edmond, a faith-based grief support center, offers a safe and supportive environment for children and teens, and the adults who care for them, as they grieve.
Bi-monthly evening sessions begin in September and run through May. The services of The Kids’ Place are offered free to all participants. For enrollment information, call 844-KIDS.
Edmond church to host free seminar for family caregivers
The Edmond Church of Christ is having a free, four-part Caregivers Fundamentals Seminar beginning Sept. 15. Representatives from Sunbeam Family Services will make presentations on the stages and emotions of care-giving, Alzheimer’s and dementia, legal resources and practical home solutions, including information about hospice, home health, respite services and Medicare.
