Getting Green presents first festival

EDMOND Three months ago, business owner Mark Neighbors founded Getting Green, a not-for-profit organization that encourages everyone to “get” environmentally correct. The idea is that everyone can live 10-20 percent more environmentally responsible.

“Too many times, people think being green will affect your lifestyle,” Neighbors said. “There are so many small things you can do. That’s why we’re calling it Getting Green instead of Green.”

The organization will present its first Getting Green Festival from 6-10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Stephenson Park.

“We can make a large impact,” Neighbors said.

Neighbors, who owns three businesses, including Parkway Cleaners, said they recycle hangers and soon will do a test run with biodegradable plastic covers. He said little things people can do to “get green” include printing on the back side of paper, recycling and turning off computers when not in use.

Jason Gilliam, marketing director for the event, said the festival will provide entertainment and learning opportunities at the same time. About 12 bands will be featured at the main stage and there will be a new speaker every hour that will talk about ideas and steps on how to “get green.” Gilliam said topics include “green” architecture, eco-friendly business practices and the benefits of wind power.

Also, exhibitors and sponsors that have some “green” practices will have tables set up. Neighbors said one business has a wood floor made out of recyclable products.

During the event, Edmond Electric will provide electricity using wind energy during the day and Sunrise Alternative Energy will provide solar energy to the exhibitors’ booths at night.
