Deer Creek sophomore takes lead in morning event

Their numbers were small as Deer Creek High School students met at the flag pole Wednesday for the national “See You at the Pole” day, but their hearts were large as they took time from their day to be still and think about others.

Sophomore Kim Parker led the group in their activities. She is involved in her youth group at Heritage Baptist Church and has been influenced by her youth pastors, Chad Puckett and Chad Kositzky, to be a leader and not someone who sits on the side letting other people make decisions for her life.

“This year one of our youth pastors, Chad Puckett, told us that we are going to have to start taking charge of our lives and things that happen in our lives,” Parker said.

“He told us that we aren’t always going to have a sign-up sheet where someone else has planned an activity for us.”

Leading “See You at the Pole” activities was only one way Parker is taking control of her life. She also is part of a support group called, “Refuge” led by sophomore Julie Chambers.

“It’s a group of sophomore girls who meet every day during lunch,” Parker said, “and we read our Bibles and pray.”

Student Council President Colin Strickland, a senior, helped Parker plan the morning activities for the group.

Following an opening prayer, devotional thought and the reading of Psalm 46:10 led by Parker, the students held hands around the flag pole and prayed for each other, other students, faculty members, their families and the nation.
