OC students have Day of Silent Solidarity

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND Students at Oklahoma Christian University joined campuses across the country in silently voicing a pro-life message on Tuesday with the Day of Silent Solidarity.

Along with wearing duct tape reading “Life” on their sleeve or across their mouth, participants could take a vow of silence in order to show solidarity with the millions of lives lost through abortion.

The Conservative Voices of Oklahoma Christian also gave away cupcakes, courtesy of local establishment Cuppies & Joe, declaring, “Every child deserves a birthday.”

This was the first year for students at OC to participate.

“It is a day of silence for the 50 million children lost to abortion since 1973,” said freshman Heather Wieprecht, head organizer of the event at Oklahoma Christian. “Some students choose to be silent for the entire day, while others will simply wear the red duct tape and spread awareness of the issue … to give every child the right to life.”

The students challenged each other to go beyond their comfort zone and contact their elected officials, telling them to vote against abortion and support legislation promoting pro-life measures.

This event was different from other pro-life rallies because instead of distributing graphic pictures, students are taking on the mission of spreading the importance of life by celebrating the hope for change in the future.

“We hope to touch the hearts of other students and make them think of the lives lost in the last three decades,” Wieprecht said. “But we also want to show them that they have the opportunity to make a change for the better.”
