Central Oklahoma Chapter of Germans from Russia Historical Society will host Elizabeth Karner, of Midwest City, who will speak about her experiences during the Nazi siege of Leningrad and her escape with her family from the siege, which killed more than a million inhabitants of Leningrad. All persons interested in this unique historic experience are welcome. The historical society’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Marianne’s Rental, 225 W. Britton Rd., Oklahoma City. The Bremen Town Musicians will be presented by second- through fifth-grade cast members for five performances at the Fine Arts Institute. This is the musical adaptation of the Brothers Grimm tale of a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster, all past their prime years in life and usefulness on their respective farms. Soon to be discarded by their masters, one by one they leave their homes and set out together for the town of Bremen to become musicians. Performances will be presented at 7 p.m. Nov. 19-20; 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Nov. 21; and 3 p.m., Nov. 22. General admission tickets are $5. Tickets are on sale at the Fine Arts Institute, 27 E. Edwards. Dancing with the Arts, a fundraising event for the Fine Arts Institute of Edmond, will be from 7-10:30 p.m. at the River Oaks Golf Club. Gold glass ornaments, fresh flowers and twinkling lights will set the stage for art patrons who will dance to the tunes of Souled Out and enjoy a buffet. The evening also features original art by local artists. Andy Boatman, a skilled artisan from the Blue Sage Studio, has designed the 2009 gold edition of the annual Fine Arts Institute commemorative glass ornament. Bell, Book and Candle, by John van Druten, runs through Dec. 6 at the Jewel Box Theatre. Gillian Holroyd finds herself casting a spell over an unattached publisher who lives in her building. He falls in love with her and proposes marriage. Witches can’t fall in love, so Gillian then has to choose between breaking off with her fellow witches or true love. “Transformations,” featuring Steven Hough on the piano, will be presented as an OKC Philharmonic Classic at 8 p.m. in the Civic Center Music Hall Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre. For ticket information, call 297-2264.

Selections from “365 Days-365 Plays” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Central Oklahoma Communications Building, room 120. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan Lori Parks undertakes the challenge of writing a play a day for an entire year. The results are a provocative collection of very short “playlets.” Each has, at is heart, a surprisingly rich disclosure of human behavior. The unique theater experience is free. The University of Central Oklahoma will host a Gourd Dance, a Native American celebration dance and ceremony, from 4-9 pm. at the Grand Ballroom in the Nigh University Center. Sponsored by Multicultural Student Services and the First American Student Association, the event will feature men and women gourd dancers in traditional regalia to commemorate Native American Heritage month. Oklahoma Community Orchestra will present a concert with the theme “A Musical Sea Voyage” at 7:30 p.m. at the Hardeman Auditorium on the Oklahoma Christian University campus, 2501 E. Memorial Road. Kyle Dillingham and Callen Clarke are launching a new symphonic work, “The Mary Rose,” premiering with John Fletcher conducting the orchestra. The Mary Rose, legendary Renaissance warship, sank tragically in 1545 during the Battle of the Solent and was raised in 1982 by the Alexander McKee and the Mary Rose Trust. The music will feature themes and instruments from the era to vividly evoke the beautiful and violent world of Renaissance England. Single concert tickets may be purchased at the door the night of the performance or online at www.okcorchestra.org. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors age 62 and older.

“Little House on the Prairie” will be presented as a musical by Celebrity Attractions through Sunday at the Civic Center Music Hall. Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura for 10 years in the much loved television series, continues her legacy by starring as Ma. For ticket information, call 297-2264.

A Royal Evening, a celebration of American and English Opera, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17-19 at the the UCO Jazz Lab, Fifth Street and Littler Avenue. UCO opera students will perform majestic selections from British and American composers, including Henry Purcell and the duo of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. “Three Sisters” will be presented by the University of Central Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Nov 19-21 and 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at Mitchell Hall Theater. The Anton Checkhov classic is directed by guest artist John Dennis, who has directed more than 15 professional productions across the country, including at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Written in 1900, the play revolves around three sisters trapped in a small Russian town and longing to escape to the more cosmopolitan Moscow. Tickets to “Three Sisters” are $14 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $4 for students. Tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 974-3375. Tickets also are available at the door. Billy Joel & Elton John Face 2 Face tour comes to the Ford Center. A Territorial Christmas Carol, based on the novel by Charles Dickens, will be at the Pollard Theatre in downtown Guthrie. Adapted by Oklahoma playwright Stephen P Scott, this version of Dickens’ classic tale of redemption and brotherly love is set in the days of the Oklahoma Land Run. The Pollard’s all-time bestseller, “A Territorial Christmas Carol” continues to play to sold-out houses into its 22nd year. Be sure to buy your tickets early. Call the box office at 282-2800.



DEC. 3-5, 10-12

Christmas Croonin’ will be at 8 p.m. at the UCO Jazz Lab. A cheerful jazz quartet along with UCO music theater’s finest vocalists help to get you in the holiday spirit by performing your favorite seasonal tunes. A Dickens of a Christmas will be celebrated in Edmond as the downtown businesses once again return to a simpler time of life, a more traditional Christmas. Festivals begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Festival Market Place Plaza with the Dickens Carolers and Santa. Karen Moore Studio will offer Christmas picture packets for $12. The Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony and essay winners presentation will begin at 6 p.m. Following the Mayor’s Tree Lighting, the Edmond Electric Parade of Lights will begin at 6:45 p.m. Downtown area streets will be closed for the parade beginning at 5 p.m. Merchants in downtown Edmond will remain open late on Dec. 3 to greet visitors and offer refreshments in the stores while shoppers from that special holiday gift.



DEC. 5, 6

Dickens Weekend begins in downtown Edmond as carolers fill the stores and streets to entertain holiday shoppers. The Dickens horse-drawn Christmas Trolley will provide visitors a ride through the downtown area on Saturday only. The wonderful smells of hot cider and roasted nuts, and more than 50,00 Christmas lights, will greet visitors to downtown Edmond this weekend.



DEC. 6

Canterbury Choral Society kicks off the Christmas season with its Canterbury Christmas concert featuring internationally recognized Oklahoma native Kyle Dillingham at the Civic Center, 201 N. Walker Ave. The annual tradition also will feature Oklahoma City University organ professor Elizabeth Harrison, the Chancel Bell Choir for the First Presbyterian Church in Edmond, the Blackwelder Brass Chamber Music Ensemble, the Canterbury Choral Society Adult Chorus, and the Canterbury Youth Choruses and Young Men’s Chorus. In addition, the choral society will have its second annual gingerbread house competition, an audience sing-a-long and a reception following the concert.
