Planning Commission rezones additions

EDMOND In an effort to resolve inconsistent zoning issues, five city rezoning applications were approved Tuesday night by the Edmond Planning Commission.

Rezoning will involve additions including the Orchards at the Trails, Northridge, Clegern Park, Mill Creek and property located west of Coltrane, one-eighth of a mile south of Covell Road.

Commissioner LeRoy Cartwright cast the only dissenting vote on the rezoning item.

“I just feel like this is a frivolous spending of public money on something that I don’t think is necessary,” Cartwright said.

Cartwright objected to the City Council initiating the rezoning process. Rezoning for these additions should begin with residents and not the Council, he said.

“If property owners came in and asked for this zoning change, I would have been in favor of it,” Cartwright said.

Bob Schiermeyer, city planner, said the Council reviewed 26 additions for rezoning five additions at a time.

Portions of these areas had been zoned for suburban office, high density multi-family use and two-family dwelling. The Edmond City Council asked that these areas be rezoned in the way they are used today for single family.

Changes in Title 22, the city’s subdivision ordinance, will not allow these inconsistent zoning issues in the future.

Attorney Lydia Lee commended the City Council for providing “protection for residential homeowners” in the community.

“The small amount the city spent on this project was money well spent,” she said.
