EDMOND —
The Edmond Planning Commission will review a variance request Tuesday evening for a 70-foot tall Sam’s Club ground sign, said Bob Schiermeyer, city planner. Sam’s Club plans to purchase 15 acres of property from Jim Tapp to build a 138,000-square foot store north of Walmart on the west side of Interstate 35.
Ninety feet of frontage would be on the parcel of land. Schiermeyer said that Sam’s Club representatives have requested the sign to be 500 square feet in size.
“Based on the amount of frontage, they are allowed a 25 foot tall sign, 60 square feet per side,” Schiermeyer wrote in his report. “There is anticipation that Mr. Tapp will sell off pad sites to the north of their location and Communication Federal already owns a pad site immediately south of the driveway planned to the Sam’s Club property.”
Barry Moore, Planning Commission chairman, said the variance request is substantial for a company that is not open to the public.
“You have to be a member so obviously you know where it is if you’re going there,” he said.
The overall population of Edmond will be excited about Sam’s Club on I-35, said Toni Weinmeister, associate director of the Edmond Economic Development Authority.
“It would definitely keep from leaking sales tax out of Edmond city limits,” Weinmeister said. “It would be a great sales tax generator.”
Former Mayor Dan O’Neil said a sign variance would create future problems on Interstate 35 by setting a bad precedent. The City of Edmond has worked hard to keep the I-35 corridor special, he said.
“This is our downtown for the next century,” O’Neil said.

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -

Memorial service for tornado victims set
Gov. Mary Fallin announced that a memorial and prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Moore. The service will honor and remember the victims of the May 20 tornado that killed 24 people in Moore and the May 19 tornado that killed two in the Shawnee and Carney area. It is open to the public.
