UCO to host presentation from tobacco ‘whistleblower’

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma will host Dr. Victor DeNoble, one of the first researchers to help “blow the whistle” on the tobacco industry, at 10 a.m. Sept. 14 in Constitution Hall in Central’s Nigh University Center.

DeNoble will present “Inside the Dark Side: The Science Behind Tobacco, The Truth Behind Lies” detailing his experience while working in, being let go by and testifying against the tobacco industry.

“We are thrilled to have a scientist of this magnitude come to raise awareness about the ill effects of tobacco use, and to promote tobacco use prevention,” said Danielle Dill, assistant director for Health Services at Central.

“With Central going tobacco-free July 1, 2010, we are excited to partner with likeminded organizations, like the Oklahoma County Tobacco Use Prevention Coalition, to bring in Dr. DeNoble.”

After receiving his Ph.D. in experimental psychology, DeNoble began working as a researcher in the 1980s for the Phillip Morris Tobacco Company with his research aimed to find a “safer” cigarette, and he created a substitute for the addictive chemical nicotine used in all cigarettes.

Phillip Morris rejected the substitute DeNoble created because a release of the “safer” product would mean the company recognizes previous cigarettes were inherently dangerous.

DeNoble, whom the tobacco industry praised for his work ethic, was let go from Phillip Morris because his research had unearthed the truth behind the tobacco industry’s use of nicotine.

Because DeNoble’s successful studies cast a negative light on the tobacco industry, the company coupled his termination with the destruction of the evidence and the lab.

In 1994, DeNoble became a “whistleblower” to testify against the actions of the tobacco industry and its cover-up of the evidence proving the industry’s product is deadly.

DeNoble is currently the vice president of Hissho Inc., a scientific and medical communication company, and has appeared on many television shows sharing his behind-the-scenes story of the tobacco industry with the world.

The presentation is sponsored by the Oklahoma County Tobacco Use Prevention Coalition, UCO Wellness Center, UCO Kinesiology and Health Studies Club, UCO Leadership Central and UCO Community Health Club.

The presentation is free and open to the public.
