EDMOND —
Negotiations seeking to move an advertising billboard standing near the Arcadia Round Barn have broken down, a person close to the negotiations said.
On Sept. 24, after learning there were no zoning ordinances regarding signs with the town of Arcadia, Zoom Media Group bought a strip of real estate from a local church and informed members it planned on building a billboard.
The company then staked and surveyed the property located near the historic Route 66 landmark. After workers erected the billboard skeleton, friends of the Round Barn alerted media outlets and protested.
In October, the issue went before the Arcadia town council, which took it under advisement. During the meeting, Zoom Media offered five options, one of which had the Arcadia Historical Society paying $12,000 for the removal and relocation of the sign.
After the meeting, negotiations attempting to resolve the stalemate continued quietly.
For some time now the top two slots have been occupied by signage related to promoting the town of Arcadia.
On Tuesday, Linda Simonton, a trustee of the Arcadia Historical Society, said negotiations have completely broken down and the society was pursuing legal action.
Simonton said it has been a long struggle, and now they were into the high tourist season. She said there wasn’t much new to say about her feelings, that the billboard is an eyesore that harms the Round Barn, an anchor of the town.
An effort to gain comment from Zoom Media ownership was not successful.
Earlier this week it was learned that the bottom two slots were occupied by advertising related to the Salvation Army.
Heide Brandes, spokeswoman for the Salvation Army, said the space was given to the organization at no cost, a generous gesture. However, after Arcadia residents complained about the development, the Salvation Army asked Zoom Media to remove it, and the company agreed to do so, Brandes said.
“We want to be a good neighbor,” she said.
