EDMOND —
The Edmond Planning Commission voted 4-0 this week in support of a request to close the unopened portion of Sixth Street. This segment is west of State Street and extends west to the Kelly Centre Shopping Center. This also includes half a block of Howard Street, south of Sixth Street.
“This street was never improved but the plat was recorded at the Oklahoma County Courthouse in 1909 or earlier,” City Planner Bob Schiermeyer noted in his report. “There are no improvements in the right-of-way, such as water lines, sewer lines, gas lines or electric lines.”
Applicant Mike Maiahy plans to build an office warehouse building west of State Street. Maiahy owns the property north of Sixth Street, west of State Street, east and west of Howard Street, Schiermeyer said. Maiahy is purchasing lots north of Sixth and west of State Street.
Schiermeyer said his office has received calls by residents of Seventh Street, supporting the block closure of Howard Street due to vehicles parked in the street.
Attorney Randel Shadid said the consolidation of the properties would allow a private driveway. Zoning issues will be discussed at a later date.
“This gets us started on a development plan,” Shadid said.
This item will go before the City Council on Oct. 22.

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -

Memorial service for tornado victims set
Gov. Mary Fallin announced that a memorial and prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Moore. The service will honor and remember the victims of the May 20 tornado that killed 24 people in Moore and the May 19 tornado that killed two in the Shawnee and Carney area. It is open to the public.
