EDMOND —
A dog at the city’s animal shelter won her category in a recent fundraiser event.
Chelsea, a loving Labrador, and Stephanie Coldiron competed in the recent Ghost Runners 5K dog run in Oklahoma City and won first place in Coldiron’s age division.
Participants were encouraged to bring their dogs to the event and were allowed to complete the entire run with them as long as the dogs were leashed and runner-friendly.
Chelsea is a spayed female, black Labrador retriever and boxer who has been available at Edmond’s animal shelter since June 25, 2010. To date, she has been in the shelter longer than any other dog accepted by the shelter.
When she arrived, Chelsea was a very sweet, but physically uncontrollable dog. Volunteers stopped wanting to walk her because she was so strong and rambunctious, and potential adopters would choose a different dog that was more handleable.
Edmond Police Capt. Nicki Smith fostered Chelsea to help her learn some manners. She started learning how to heel on a leash, refrain from jumping as well as sit-stay and down-stay.
Chelsea came back to the shelter a number of times to be available for adoption, but no suitable adopter ever came.
Earlier this year, Chelsea suffered an injury and tore the ACL in one of her knees. Through the generosity of Paws for Life, a local volunteer group, she was able to have it surgically repaired. Six weeks later, the implant tore and she required a second surgery.
Since then she’s been on the mend and is now available for adoption again.
Coldiron, who is a runner, said she has walked Chelsea a number of times. She said she saw the race as a chance to give an active dog a chance to do what she loves and to help tell her story.
“I’ll do anything for this dog,” Coldiron said.
Chelsea is an active dog who loves to be with people and got along great with the other five dogs at the foster home. She weighs about 60 pounds and also gets along well with larger dogs she’s played with at the shelter. She is not too fond of smaller dogs or cats.
Smith said Chelsea needs to be active and in a home with no small children due to her exuberance. An ideal owner would be someone who enjoys outdoor activities like running or hunting.
“She’s a really good dog that needs to go to the right home,” Smith said.
The shelter has been receiving more animals than have been adopted, and many dogs and cats are available, Smith said. A number were dropped off just before the holiday, she said.
Another pressing need is for more foster homes, Smith said.
For more information including shelter hours and adoption fees, which are extremely competitive with other shelters, and other aspects of adopting an animal with the city, call 216-7615 or visit edmondok.com/safety/animalwelfare. The shelter is in Edmond’s Cross Timbers Municipal Complex, just east of I-35 on Covell at 2424 Old Timbers Drive.
