OKLAHOMA CITY —
The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command is encouraging citizens throughout the Central Oklahoma area to clean out their closets and donate their gently used coats to The Salvation Army to give to those in need.
To date, only two racks of coats remain, yet more and more families are requesting warm winter coats. Every year, The Salvation Army hands out several thousand coats to individuals and children who would otherwise go without.
“It’s already getting cold, and our supply of coats is running dangerously low,” said Social Services Director Ashley Jones. “We also need donations of scarves, hats and gloves. Children’s coats are especially needed right now.”
District 2 County Commissioner Brian Maughan announced a county-wide coat drive to help collect gently used items for the needy. Maughan said that for the first time, volunteers would distribute fliers in Oklahoma County neighborhoods asking for donations to the coat drive, and would return to pick up the items.
“We saw a special need this year, since the drive had traditionally relied on large donations at special Thunder games, and that apparently won’t take place in 2011,” Maughan said. He said his office and the South Oklahoma City Rotary Club had become involved in the drive in recent years, but that their combined efforts for 2011 would be much larger.
“We will also have drop boxes in place so Oklahoma County residents can drop off donated coats at convenient locations,” Maughan said. “We know how generous Oklahomans can be, given the opportunity to help a neighbor.”
Maughan said volunteers would soon begin delivering coat drive fliers to neighborhoods. Anyone wishing to donate items or place a drop box in a public location can also call 713-1502, Maughan’s office, or email him at brian@okcounty.org.
