Methodists to open new campus in Edmond

Special to The Sun

EDMOND — St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City is expanding its ministry to Edmond.

The first worship service will begin at 11 a.m. March 30 at Sequoyah Middle School, 1125 E. Danforth Road. Senior Pastor Bob Long said the worship service will contain traditional elements combined with multi-media and St. Luke’s familiar inspirational music. The Edmond campus also will offer programs for children and youth.

Long said there’s something about a fresh and new creation, building new relationships and friendships.

“At the same time this is going to be a church started where we already have our core value of sharing God’s love and bringing hope to the world,” Long said. “We are committed to  sharing a message of hope and serving within the Edmond community.”

Long said studies show that church attendance is declining, even in the Bible belt, and that many Edmond residents do not regularly attend church.

Long said the multi-site church approach will have a positive impact on church attendance. A multi-site church is defined as one church that meets at multiple locations, typically transmitting the sermon by satellite to multiple locations.

With one of the largest multi-site churches in the country as its neighbor, St. Luke’s received insight from LifeChurch.tv, started by a former United Methodist pastor.

“The way we communicate as a culture has evolved,” Long said. “Social media and mobile devices have created endless possibilities for communication. This is why there are so many churches now that are doing satellite campuses.”

Long said St. Luke’s is in the process of reviewing land in north Edmond and plans to build a permanent campus within two years.

St. Luke’s will be celebrating 125 years in April; its downtown Oklahoma City location was established in 1889. In 2013, the ministry expanded to include Asbury and Fuente de Vida congregations.
