Touchmark at Coffee Creek residents tell stories of war, love and life

EDMOND — President Harry Truman once said that the only thing new in this world is the history that you don’t know.

In the new compilation of “As We Lived It — Vol. 5,” residents of Touchmark at Coffee Creek share their histories so younger generations might learn from their experiences.

The 17 stories were transcribed by Touchmark residents Judith and Leaman Harris following oral storytelling sessions at Touchmark in Edmond.

Nine of the stories are told by World War II veterans, including the story of James Garrison, who recalls being a teenager at the movies in Muskogee when the movie stopped and an announcement was made that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. He didn’t even know where Pearl Harbor was, but he did predict how the course of his life would change. His story is called, “Air Force Pilot in Three Wars.”

“There is also the story of one of the first women to serve in the Navy WAVES,” Judith Harris said. “Another story is told by a resident who was a girl growing up as an Italian citizen experiencing life in a country that was an enemy nation during the war.”

She said many of the stories present a wide view of American life, as the events occurred when families sat together around the radio listening to news of the world.

All stories share struggles and triumphs and include people who worked in medical missions, art, baseball and psychology as well as one who rose to be a leader in the Osage Tribe.

The book is available for purchase for $34.95 and can be ordered by calling Touchmark at 340-1975 or visiting TouchmarkEdmond.com. Proceeds benefit the Touchmark Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)3 public charity devoted to enhancing the well-being of seniors.
