EFD now recruiting

EDMOND — If you have what it takes to be a firefighter, the City of Edmond has opportunities available.

Among other things, firefighters must be able to operate both as a team and independently during incidents of uncertain duration, spend extensive time outside exposed to the elements and they must perform physically demanding work in hot — up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit — and humid — up to 100 percent — atmospheres while wearing gear that significantly impairs body cooling mechanisms, according to the firefighter job description on the city’s website.

Firefighters also work in wet, icy or muddy areas and perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces on roof tops or from ladders and endure other potential hazards.

Chief Training Officer Jon Neely said the Edmond Fire Department is looking for highly motivated, dedicated individuals with a servant’s heart to join the agency’s fire service team. When citizens are in their worst moment of need, the agency’s goal is to be at its best in providing service, Neely said.

Applications are being accepted through 5 p.m. Dec. 21.

The largest division within the Edmond Fire Department is the operations division, according to information posted on the city’s website. The division consists of personnel responsible for fire suppression, emergency medical first response, rescue activities and mitigation of disasters.

In a city of 93,000, the agency operates five stations, an administrative center and a state-of-the-art regional training facility with features including a five-story drill tower, a two-story search-and-rescue building, a driving pad and road course, an SCBA maze/confined space trailer and a flashover simulator.

Neely said applicants must be at least 18 years of age, meet all requirements of the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement system, possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent on or before Jan. 3, 2012, have a driving record acceptable to the city’s insurance carrier, have a valid driver’s license and have no felony convictions.

Applicants will be required to pass a written test, a physical ability/agility test, a polygraph exam and the state required physical exam, Neely said. All applicants must be able to obtain National Registry as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic within 18 months of hire date.

After completion of the 25-week recruit academy training, the base salary will be $3,738.10 per month, Neely said.

    The Edmond City Council voted 5-0 in favor of the city purchasing 20.5 acres of land immediately to the north of Gracelawn Cemetery. Purchasing the property is needed for future expansion of the cemetery, Mayor Charles Lamb, said.
    Gracelawn Cemetery is owned and operated by the city and is located on the northwest corner of Danforth and Boulevard.

  • Warmth needed to grow tomatoes

    The time for those growing tomatoes in their garden is when the soil temperature is above 60°F and fear of frost has past. We are generally safe from frosts after April 5.  However, frosts have occurred as late as May 1 in the Oklahoma City area.     A state agency says misinformation related to the debate about the cause of more earthquakes across Central Oklahoma includes oil well types, well numbers and injection pressure.
    The Prague sequence of 2011 along the Wilzetta Fault zone included a significant foreshock, a main shock of magnitude 5.7 and numerous aftershocks. It has been suggested that this sequence represents tremors triggered by fluid injection.
    More recently, earthquakes have been recorded in the vicinity of Jones, Arcadia Lake, Edmond, Guthrie, Langston and Crescent. Regulators and scientists are working together to better understand what’s causing all the shaking.
