The Guthrie-Edmond Regional Airport Board learned Tuesday that construction has started on the airport’s northwest development area connecting the runway/taxiway.
GERA airport manager Justin Heid told the board that this area of the airport has been closed down and notices have been sent out that the runway should be opened back up fully within the next week.
Heid updated the board about several hangar development projects. He said Zivko has nearly completed its hangar and Herman Hogue and Stan Young are beginning work on their hangar project.
The board approved Greg Mills’ application to build a 50-foot by 50-foot hangar.
Board members expected to hear a presentation from Jeff Ewing with Bruno Events for the 2014 United States Golf Association (USGA) Senior Open to be at Oak Tree but were notified that Ewing couldn’t attend this meeting due to another conflict. His presentation has been scheduled for the board’s January board meeting.
The GERA board tabled a matter discussing the creation of an Airport Board Trust until members of both the Guthrie and Edmond City Councils can review the matter.
Guthrie board member Lamar Wade made the recommendation that both city councils meet in a joint special workshop next month on this subject. Both the Guthrie and Edmond city managers agreed to try to find a common date in January for the councils to meet.
Board members also discussed the idea of installing a unisex bathroom in a hangar owned by Guthrie businessman Frank Bross. Guthrie board member Joe Underwood said he has discussed the issue with Bross who has space in his hangar for a bathroom. Underwood said the space is already plumbed.
“There is no restroom on one side of the airport and there is a need for one,” Underwood said. “He is willing to give up some space in his hangar for this.”
Wade suggested talking with Bross who is a contractor about working out a deal for building the bathroom in exchange for other concessions such as lower rent or lengthening a lease agreement up to the amount of the cost of the bathroom construction.
Heid said he also would work up financial numbers to see how much the utilities would cost the airport for the bathroom.
In other action, Heid told the board that bids were let and a low bidder was accepted for a corporate hangar infrastructure project. He said construction is scheduled to begin Jan. 14.
Heid concluded his report by giving a wildlife update for the airport.
“The evidence of coyote activity has been prevalent at the airport,” Heid said. “USDA was notified and two coyotes were removed from the airfield. USDA has performed checks on the birds and deer as well and will continue to do so throughout the migration season.”

3 miles of Broadway restoration nears completion
Work to restore 3 miles of Broadway from Waterloo to Simpson was near completion Friday, said Mark Sharpton, District 1 county commissioner. Atlas Paving Company began the process of resurfacing the road this week.
“Another improvement on the roadway will be the application of new safety striping,” Sharpton said.
