OKLAHOMA CITY —
CASA of Oklahoma County honored 26 new Court Appointed Special Advocates on June 27 in a ceremony at the Oklahoma County Juvenile Center.
As usual, Edmond was well-represented with eight locals taking the Oath of Office jointly administered by Special Judges Larry Shaw, Greg Ryan and John Jacobsen. The new advocates are: Denise Flori, Zeth McNeal, Jordan Orosco, Bambi Rogers, Ron Scharton, Michael Thibodeaux, Judie Weaver and Amy E. White.
“CASA volunteers are officers of the court who serve as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the juvenile court judges,” said Lee Ann Limber, executive director of CASA of Oklahoma County. “The CASA interviews all parties, examines the records pertaining to the families, and submits a written report to the court with recommendations as to the best interests of children who have suffered abuse and/or neglect.”
Last year 230 CASA volunteers represented 765 children, which is approximately 30 percent of the total number of children in the system.
“Our ultimate goal is that every child will have an advocate,” Limber said. “To accomplish that we will obviously need about three times the number of current volunteers.”
To be an advocate, one must be at least 21, able to pass a background check and a rigorous interview process, willing to attend 40 hours of training, willing to make a one-year commitment to serving children and have job flexibility to attend court and other daytime meetings.
Persons interested in either making a donation or in volunteering may call 713-6456 or visit www.okcountycasa.org.

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -
