Runaway driver damages 7 cars on Danforth

EDMOND — A runaway driver sideswiped three cars on city streets before hitting a curb, going airborne and crashing into four more vehicles in an Edmond parking lot Tuesday evening, police said.

Edmond Police Sgt. Scott Fees said the driver, an elderly woman whose name was not released, was eastbound on Danforth Road about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when she hit two vehicles near the Boulevard intersection.

The driver continued east on Danforth at speeds witnesses estimated at 80 mph and hit another vehicle at the Chowning intersection, police said. The car then crossed the center line and two lanes of traffic, hit a curb and went airborne before crashing into four cars in the parking lot of Ted’s Cafe Escondido.

The driver was transported to Mercy Health Center with injuries police did not think were life-threatening, Fees said. Any existing medical condition the driver may have is under investigation, he said.

There were no other injuries, Fees said.

“That’s pretty fortunate considering the high rate of speed,” he said. “This could’ve been a lot worse.”
