Edmond resident 17-year-old Abbey Grace is one of 11 students chosen from throughout the United States to represent China’s Children International and Half Moon Foundation to volunteer in one of the China Care Children’s Centers/Homes when she visits China in July.
Abbey will be starting her senior year at Deer Creek High School when school begins in August and now she is trying to raise money to help fund her trip.
She and her younger sister were once orphans living in one of China’s many orphanages. Abbey was adopted by her mother, Linda Grace, when she was 10 months old and brought to America. Four years later her mother adopted her sister.
Abbey said it has been on her heart to return to China to serve and give back by helping other children like herself who have been abandoned and are living in orphanages.
“In China, these children are left behind, hopeless, hurting and vulnerable due to the cultural stigma of gender or their special needs,” Abbey said.
The volunteers will help the staff with the children’s daily needs, play with them and most of all love them.
China’s Children International (http://www.chinaschildreninternational.org) and Half the Sky Foundation (http://halfthesky.org/en) have invited Abbey along with 11 other China adoptee teens across the United States to go on a mission trip to volunteer at one of their China Care Children’s Centers/Homes in Beijing.
“It (care home) is a specialized medical care facility for orphaned babies, toddlers and children in the heart of China’s capital,” Abbey said. “The care home not only provides a place for these orphaned children to receive pre- and post-operational care but also establishes a family-like community for these children as they are loved and cared for by specially trained nannies.”
Abbey needs help in raising funds for the trip, and her goal date is May 30. The mission trip to Beijing, China, is July 4-14.
“This will be my first time back to China since my adoption in 1998. For me to go on this mission trip, financial support is needed,” Abbey said.
