Fundraiser to benefit Round Barn

EDMOND — Friends of Arcadia’s Round Barn have a “to do list” of needed projects:

• A wheel chair lift up to the loft.

• Purchase and installation of custom siding.

• Caulking gaps in the walls to keep warm air in and cold winter winds out.

• And now there’s the unexpected cost if supporters agree to one of the settlement options from the company that owns the stalled billboard.

Donations are what keep the Round Barn running, and every penny received goes straight back into the maintenance, upkeep, preservation and improvement of the historic Round Barn and its property, said Linda Simonton, a trustee of the Arcadia Historical Society and acting secretary.

But a percentage of tourists don’t drop so much as a dollar in the Round Barn gift shop donation box, said Sam Gillaspy, affectionately called Mr. Sam. And the Arcadia Historical Society constantly needs the support of volunteers, companies, organizations and individuals to keep things going, he said.

Members of the Arcadia Historical Society hope area residents will come and support the upcoming fundraiser, which was planned before the current controversy began.

The fundraiser benefiting the Round Barn will be at the site from noon to 10 p.m. Nov. 6. All of the money raised from the $10 admission tickets will benefit the Round Barn, Simonton said.

Additionally, the proceeds from $1 tickets will be part of a 50-50 drawing, Simonton said. If $500 worth of these tickets are bought, $250 of it would go to the Round Barn and the remaining $250 would go to the winning ticket holder.

Round Barn supporters may also still buy commemorative bricks that will pave walkways. More details are available at the gift shop.

The Arcadia Historical Society has several other items on its wish list:

• Re-roofing and renovating the Brooks Building, located adjacent to the Round Barn. The society is interested in leasing shop space in the Brooks Building, and proceeds would benefit the Arcadia Historical Society and the Round Barn, Simonton said.

• Re-roofing the First Methodist Church, located at Sixth Street and Lee. The society is considering using the building, which is being kept clean on the inside, possibly as a rental wedding chapel, Simonton said. Proceeds would benefit the Arcadia Historical Society and the Round Barn.

• Developing a relationship with a corporate sponsor. The Arcadia Historical Society is currently barely receiving enough funds to maintain the Round Barn, Simonton said.

• Add more volunteers to help with various needs at the Round Barn. Volunteers work 3.5 hour shifts at the gift shop, which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Donations of time, labor or skill are appreciated.

• Add new members to the Arcadia Historical Society.

Recent donations from generous donors have allowed replacement of the old wooden staircase with custom-built steel ones, creating a safer, sturdier Round Barn. An alarm and new fire alarm system were installed. Color brochures and full-color historical books were printed. A large sign on I-35 directing travelers down Route 66 to the Round Barn was purchased, and a grant from the state paid for new cement picnic tables.

If you can’t make it to next month’s fundraiser, donations to the Arcadia Historical Society may be dropped into the gift box at the Round Barn or checks may be mailed to: The Old Round Barn, P.O. Box 134, Arcadia OK 73007.

Donations to the society, a nonprofit organization, are tax deductible. Donations are logged and records kept for each and every donation the society will send a receipt for your tax records.
