Run to benefit Hugs Project

EDMOND — The second annual Blazing Sun Freedom Run will be Saturday at Stars and Stripes Park on Lake Hefner. A 5K and 10K Walk/Run will begin at 7:30 a.m. as well as a special 1K kids run with a military “Hero” dressed in full camouflage carrying a weighted backpack.

The Hugs Project will benefit from the proceeds of the run. Executive director of The Hugs Project Karen Stark coordinated the run to supplement the funding needed for sending support packages over to military serving in the Middle East.

The Hugs Project began 11 years ago and is based out of Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City. The group sends troops care packages including cooling devices. For more information, go to www.thehugsproject.com/. To sign up, go to www.EarlySignUP.com/blazingsun.

The Central Edmond Urban Development Board has revisited plans made in a 1998 Downtown Master Plan through public meetings and presentations to protect the future development of Broadway. Recommendations by the group will be taken into account by future city councils.

3 miles of Broadway restoration nears completion
Work to restore 3 miles of Broadway from Waterloo to Simpson was near completion Friday, said Mark Sharpton, District 1 county commissioner. Atlas Paving Company began the process of resurfacing the road this week.
“Another improvement on the roadway will be the application of new safety striping,” Sharpton said.
A recent bid letting by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation resulted in Action Supply being the lowest bidder at $27,752.30. The bid will be awarded June 3, Sharpton said.
