City drops ICLEI membership

EDMOND — The City of Edmond has ended its membership with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives after grassroots opposition to the city’s sustainability program focused on ICLEI.

“The benefits of the city’s membership are significantly outweighed by the negative perceptions of ICLEI that we have heard from people in our community, both in last Monday’s public comment forum and from the last couple of months in general,” said Larry Stevens, city manager. “We believe it is far more productive to focus our efforts and attention on what the City of Edmond is doing in our Community Stewardship efforts, instead of what we are not doing.”

The city will focus on its sustainability by being an effective steward of its natural, fiscal and human resources to promote quality of life, Stevens said.

The City sent a letter to ICLEI formally notifying that entity of the membership withdrawal. The city joined ICLEI in 2009 to utilize software that calculates and converts data needed to determine energy savings, emissions and technology effectiveness, Stevens said.

Nearly 200 Edmond-area audience members gathered at the Edmond Community Center for the 2.5-hour forum on Monday. The common message was that U.N. Agenda 21 is a way for all activities on the planet, including in Edmond, to be brought under the control of the United Nations.

Both the U.N. and ICLEI have denied having a goal to take over personal property rights in Edmond.
