Shana Perry was named the new principal of Summit Middle School starting for the 2014-15 school year. The Edmond Board of Education voted on the personnel change at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday.
Perry, the current principal at Orvis Risner Elementary School, said she is looking forward to the experience and helping the school grow.
“It’s been an honor to serve as principal of Orvis Risner for the last two years,” Perry said. “Knowing that Summit is a flagship school within our district and the longevity of tenure of Mrs. Witmer, I know there are pretty big shoes to fill.”
Prior to becoming principal at Orvis Risner Elementary School, Perry was a principal and assistant principal at Mid-Del Public Schools for five years, she attended Putnam City Public Schools for her assistant principal internship year and has taught at several intercity and suburban school districts.
Perry also was named the 2012-13 middle school principal of the year for the state of Oklahoma and went on to become one of the top three finalists for national teacher of the year.
Perry will replace current principal Desarae Witmer, who is leaving Edmond Public Schools to accept a position with Oklahoma City Public Schools. Witmer said her new position will be associate director of secondary education and reform and will work with middle schools and high schools within the Oklahoma City school district.
Witmer, who has been principal of Summit Middle School for the past 11 years, said she will miss a lot of great people she’s met in Edmond.
“I’ve had a wonderful experience with parents, teachers and students,” Witmer said. “It’s truly been a blessing.”
Before becoming principal at Summit Middle School, Witmer was assistant principal at Central Middle School for three years.
The job opening for principal of Orvis Risner Elementary School will be posted on the Edmond school district’s website soon, said Susan Parks-Schlepp, director of public information and community involvement with Edmond Public Schools.
