‘THE NOISY PAINT BOX’
BY BARB ROSENSTOCK
Acclaimed artist Mary GrandPre, best known as the illustrator of the Harry Potter books, joins author Barb Rosenstock in this dynamic celebration of creativity, “The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art,” a picture book biography of abstract painter Vasily Kandinsky.
Rosenstock and GrandPre tell the fascinating story of Kandinsky, one of the very first painters of abstract art who was believed to have a condition called synesthesia. Throughout his life, Kandinsky experienced colors as sounds, and sounds as colors — and thus, bold, groundbreaking works of art burst forth from the music he heard in his paint box.
More than a biographical account, “The Noisy Paint Box” reads as a lively storybook and features exuberant illustrations by GrandPre that celebrate and honor Kandinsky’s style. The color shifts from darker, muted tones to bold, dazzling colors as he embraces his creativity, and readers will pore over the fun and symbolic details in the art.
Backmatter includes quotes and four paintings by Kandinsky, an author’s note, and more resources on synesthesia and museum collections of abstract art.
