Edmond Beautiful Inc. will have a Spring Garden Tour of the 2011 “Yard of the Week” winners May 26-27. The “Yard of the Week” program recognizes yards and gardens during the summer months for outstanding flowers and landscaping.
Maps are available at the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce, 825 E. Second St., and the Edmond Library, 10 S. Boulevard.

Edmond Beautiful works to establish, enhance and empower Edmond toward a better environment for all generations. The organization provides the community with a way to improve the environment by recycling, remodeling old businesses and regulating laws ensuring the environment of the community, along with many other projects educating the citizens of Edmond on the environment.
Yard of the Week is an annual promotion highlighting homeowners in Edmond who have contributed to the city’s quality of life by having a beautiful yard. Residents are encourged to nominate a beautiful yard throughout the summer by calling the chamber at 341-2808. Each nomination should include the address, resident’s name and telephone number if known. Only yards visible from city streets are eligible.
Edmond Beautiful judges yards on Sunday evenings and Monday mornings. Each weekly winner gets to place the special classically designed “Edmond Yard of the Week” sign by Vital Signs with the Edmond Beautiful logo on it in their yard. A photograph of the award recipients and prize-winning yard is featured in The Edmond Sun’s Home and Garden page on Saturday, with the first winner to be announced on June 9. The winner receives a free six-month subscription to The Sun. In addition, they receive a $50 store credit from The Home Depot on Broadway.
The Memorial Day weekend tour will feature the following 11 homes:
• 1400 Kerry Lane in the Creek Bend Addition;
• 616 E. Ninth St. in the Brentwood Addition;
• 705 Mary Lee Lane in the Brentwood Addition;
• 1720 Greenleaf Lane in the Whispering Creek Addition;
• 1113 Blue Ridge Drive in the Park Lane Estates Addition;
• 1117 Blue Ridge Drive in the Park Lane Estates Addition;
• 1015 N. Blackwelder Ave. in the Chowning Heights Addition;
• 2005 Three Star Road in the Wood Creek Townhomes;
• 3401 River Downs in the Steeple Chase Addition;
• 5924 Great Hampden Road in the Hampden Hollow Addition; and
• 4104 Eaton Place in the Clayton Pond Addition.
The tour is self directed by utilizing the free map.

Clean-up continues for Edmond tornado victims
Mid-June is the approximate time that work is expected to be completed in Edmond for replacing nine transmission structures lost in Sunday’s tornado, said Brian Alford, OG&E spokesperson. Repairs could take longer, depending on weather conditions, he added.
Work in Edmond focuses on the Forest Oaks and Thornbrooke additions, both along Bryant Avenue. Twelve homes were damaged in the city by the storm that also dropped hail on northwest Edmond. Major damage impacted three of the homes while the other nine homes had minor damage, said Matt Stillwell, director of the city’s emergency communications and management.
Contract crews from out-of-state are helping OG&E in their restoration effort throughout central and southern Oklahoma, Alford said. -

Memorial service for tornado victims set
Gov. Mary Fallin announced that a memorial and prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Moore. The service will honor and remember the victims of the May 20 tornado that killed 24 people in Moore and the May 19 tornado that killed two in the Shawnee and Carney area. It is open to the public.

Carpenter Square Theatre gets Disney-fied with ‘Something Intangible’
Carpenter Square Theatre presents “Something Intangible,” a comedy-drama based on Walt and Roy Disney in 1940s Hollywood. Bruce Graham’s tale focuses on the period when they are developing a full-length animated film set to classical music. The new play will be performed through June 8 at 800 W. Main in downtown Oklahoma City.
