EDMOND — One unsuspecting visitor celebrating his birthday at Remington Park had no idea what was in store for him as he stepped through the entryway at 5:07 p.m. Dec. 14. Patrick Dang of Edmond was greeted with confetti cannons, a crown and more than $2,000 in prizes as he became the 2 millionth visitor this year to the racetrack and casino.

Dang, a University of Central Oklahoma student with a double major in management and marketing, said he finished his college finals less than an hour before heading to Remington Park for his birthday celebration.

“This is a great birthday surprise, for sure,” Dang said. “I took my last college final less than an hour ago and wanted to celebrate. Next thing I know, a man is putting a crown on my head and confetti went everywhere. This definitely is not like any of my trips to Remington before.”

Remington Park president and general manager Scott Wells attributes the attendance record to the level of horses racing at the facility, the amenities added as part of the many renovation projects as well as the enhancement of both race-day and casino promotions and patron rewards.

“This is an historic day for everyone at Remington Park,” Wells said. “We have focused on multiple areas over the course of the last two years. Extensive renovations have taken place all over the property and purses have continued to climb attracting a higher level of horse racing. The key to all of this is our employees. Throughout all of this, they have been determined to create one of the best entertainment experiences in the state, and I believe surpassing this milestone definitely can be attributed to them.”

Wells said overall attendance has grown significantly in recent years since Global Gaming Solutions, a subsidiary of the Chickasaw Nation, purchased the track in late 2009. Annual attendance has increased from 1.69 million in 2009 — the last operational year for the track’s previous owner — to 1,755,420 in 2010. It continued to climb in 2011 to 1.9 million. The final total for 2012 is expected to reach 2.1 million or more by the end of the year.
