EDMOND — Blood Drive Thursday at Francis Tuttle

You can help others by participating in a student-sponsored blood drive at Francis Tuttle Technology Center. The first blood drive of the year with the Oklahoma Blood Institute will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Francis Tuttle’s Rockwell campus, 12777 N. Rockwell, in the Campus Center building.

Donors have the opportunity to select a T-shirt and tickets to the Oklahoma City Zoo, as well as tickets to an Oklahoma City RedHawks game.

During the month of August, blood donors can support the American Cancer Society, Oklahoma Region, by forgoing the T-shirt offered in appreciation for giving blood. In doing so, the OBI will make a monetary contribution of similar value, giving donors the chance to use funds otherwise allocated for donor incentives to assist those fighting cancer who may need blood during surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Donors must be at least 17 years old (must have parental permission if 17), must bring a photo I.D. or other proof of birth date and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors are also advised to get a good night’s sleep before donating, as well as to eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before and after donating.

The blood supply is low and the need is great. Please consider donation as a wonderful way to give to your community, and encourage friends and co-workers to join you.

Palin to speak at OCPA Liberty Gala

OKLAHOMA CITY — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be the featured speaker at the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs’ annual Liberty Gala in Tulsa on Sept. 15.

“Gov. Palin’s message of free market entrepreneurship and individual liberty resonates not only with the core values of OCPA, but with all Oklahomans,” said OCPA President Michael Carnuccio. “She has transformed the landscape of American politics and is the most powerful movement conservative in our nation.”

Palin is also a vocal supporter of the special needs community. Her appearance comes on the heels of Oklahoma’s passage of the most important school choice measure in state history.

House Bill 3393, which was signed into law in June, will provide scholarships to students with special needs that will allow them to attend any private school of their choice where their needs are better served.

Palin will join a prestigious group of past OCPA speakers, including U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Gen. Tommy Franks, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the late conservative icon William F. Buckley Jr.

The 2010 Liberty Gala will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Tulsa Convention Center, 100 Civic Center in Tulsa. Sponsored tables are still available. A limited number of individual tickets are now on sale. For more information on sponsorships or tickets, visit www.ocpathink.org or call 602-1667.
