Vandals hit church, get political
EDMOND — Vandals have damaged an Edmond church and spray-painted an apparent anti-President Obama message on a city restaurant, police said.
On Monday, police went to Flatire Burgers, 318 E. Ayers St., in reference to someone spray-painting the wall on the south side of the business, according to a report filed by Officer John Zeigler. The wall runs adjacent to the alley and is not in view from Ayers.
Several pieces of graffiti, including the word “Nobama,” were painted on the wall, police said. On the Web, “Nobama” is a popular way to express anti-Obama sentiment. There was no suspect information at the time the report was filed.
In an unrelated incident, on Monday police went to the New Covenant United Methodist Church, 2700 S. Boulevard, where a staff member showed where someone had broken out a large piece of plywood that covered the door of the vacant church, entered and vandalized the interior, according to a report filed by Officer Rickey Ecker.
The church is vacant due to a previous fire and is going to be remodeled soon, police said. A total of about $2,500 worth of damage was done to three windows, two doors, ceiling tiles, sheetrock and lights.
Officials suspect an aged heating, ventilating and air conditioning system sparked the February 2008 fire that caused an estimated $2.5 million worth of damage to the church’s youth building. Firefighters kept the fire from entering the sanctuary.
