Deer Creek prepares for flu season
EDMOND — Sing “Happy Birthday” twice for better health.
That is what Deer Creek school nurse Carole Ashby says in preparation for the flu season that is coming upon Oklahoma students.
“We urge students to cover their cough by coughing into their elbow, and after washing their hands sing “Happy Birthday” twice,” she said.
Ashby also encourages hand sanitizer with 67 percent alcohol be used throughout the day.
Parents are encouraged to keep their children at home if they are sick, Ashby said, and teachers are encouraged to stay home themselves if they are ill. If children come to school ill or become ill while at school, teachers have been instructed to send them to the office where they will be allowed to wait in the school clinic until their parent can pick them up.
“To me the most important thing is if you are sick, stay home,” Ashby said, “and don’t send children back too early.”
Ashby said the peak time for the regular flu season is the end of November and the first of December.
“We will have free flu vaccine for children from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall on Nov. 10,” Ashby said. “Shots will be given to any child that is under the age of 19 and in the Deer Creek School District.”
Ashby said the district is not providing transportation for the shots. Parents will have four questions to answer before their child can receive a shot.
The injections are being paid for and provided by the Oklahoma Caring Van through Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Ashby said several people will be administering the shots.
“We have secured vaccine for the teachers through the Oklahoma City-County Health Department” Ashby said. “I do think it is valuable. I am a big proponent of the flu shot.”
Ashby said in her opinion people should get the H1N1 shot now and wait on the regular flu shot until after Oct. 1 up through November.
Masks, hand sanitizer and plastic gloves for teacher use have been provided for each classroom.
Richard Vrooman, in charge of district operations, said three levels of sanitizer have been purchased and are in use at the moment.
One type of antiseptic is used by custodians to wipe down desks, surface areas and door knobs each night, and another is used to sanitize the buses.
