A judge has delayed sentencing for the last remaining defendant in the death of an Edmond homeless man affectionately called “Bicycle Bob.”
On May 16, Connor Mason, 22, appeared in the court of Oklahoma County District Judge Jerry Bass and changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. Mason faced a first-degree murder charge in the killing of Dwite Morgan, 54, who was often seen riding a bicycle around the city.
In October 2009, Morgan was found by another homeless man at his campsite located just west of the downtown railroad tracks in an alley, police said. The victim had been stabbed multiple times, according to the medical examiner’s office autopsy report.
When Mason changed his plea, Judge Bass explained that by entering a blind plea of guilty he would determine if the defendant would receive life or life without parole. Under a life sentence, he would not be eligible for parole until he had served 38 years, three months in prison.
Originally, Mason’s sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 6.
On Monday, he appeared in court through his attorneys. Judge Bass continued the sentencing until Oct. 25. No reason for the delay was given on the Oklahoma State Courts Network’s online database. In May, the judge ordered a pre-sentencing investigation.
On May 18, after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors, co-defendant Nikolas Kerr, 22, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. He faced an accessory after the fact of first-degree murder charge for not telling police what he knew about Morgan’s death.
Kerr, released from jail on bond in March 2010, will serve probation for the accessory charge and possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia charges. He also pleaded guilty and also will serve probation for an animal cruelty charge.
In July 2010, a third co-defendant, Heather Holden, 22, entered a negotiated plea of guilty and received probation for an amended obstructing an officer charge, a misdemeanor. Originally, Holden was charged with accessory after the fact of first-degree murder. Shortly after the appearance, she was released from jail.
Both Holden and Kerr agreed to testify against Mason before his trial was scheduled to begin. Mason’s attorney has said his client is a changed man who accepted responsibility for his actions.
