EDMOND — EDITOR’S NOTE: See Tuesday’s Edmond Sun for continued coverage of awards given out at Friday night’s Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.

The community service and contribution that Dr. Krista Jones has given to Edmond and Oklahoma has distinguished her as the 2012 Citizen of the Year by the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Wow. You could knock me over with a feather. This goes beyond my …comprehension or thought process,” said Jones, a dentist. A full capacity crowd cheered as Jones received her award at the University of Central Oklahoma Friday night at the Chamber’s annual awards banquet.

“When I look at all of the many previous recipients of this incredible award, I am so inadequate, and I just appreciate it so much,” she said.

Jones is a consummate professional who has been active in local, state and national professional associations, said Andy Lester, last year’s Citizen of the Year.

The Chamber’s requirements for the Citizen of the Year are to have demonstrated excellence in their business or profession, brought state or national acclaim to the City of Edmond, been involved in activities for the betterment of Edmond or served through involvement with civic and service organizations, Lester said.

“This is an obvious choice and it’s long overdue,” Lester said

Jones is a member of the Edmond Hall of Fame and was the George Mikesell Award winner as Rotarian of the Year of the Edmond Rotary Club. Jones is a member of the Oklahoma County Dental Society, Oklahoma Dental Association, Oklahoma Association of Women Dentists and the OU College of Dentistry Alumni Association, where she has served each as president.

“Sometimes when you least expect it, grace surrounds you even when you don’t expect it. And sometimes grace surrounds you especially when you don’t expect it,” Jones said. “Thank you so much for this incredible honor. I really appreciate it.”

She and her husband Craig Stinson enjoy watching the total solar eclipse of the sun in such places as Turkey, Zimbabwe, Libya, Peru, Mexico, Southern Caribbean, Tahiti and Easter Island.

Jones travels on medical mission trips through the OU Health Sciences Center Christian Medical-Dental Society and Volunteers in Mission of the United Methodist Church and has served in Peru, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Israel and Kenya.

The Chamber is a 100 year-old, 1,100-member organization working together to create a strong local economy and to promote the community. The Edmond Chamber provides networking opportunities and business contacts for its members and represents business interests to government.
