OU Medical Edmond greets 100th baby

100th baby born at old Edmond Hospital now works at OU-Edmond

EDMOND — Sometimes it seems as if history repeats itself.

My Birth Center at OU Medical Center Edmond delivered its 100th baby at 7:42 a.m. Friday, 44 years after the hospital’s first 100th baby was born in 1968. My Birth Center opened in September, becoming the first birth place available in Edmond since 2005.

Amy and Chris Struchtemeyer welcomed Cole Brian to their family. Looking at Cole nestled in her lap, Amy said her newborn makes her feel on top of the world.

“It’s just a really special feeling,” Chris said. “It’s one of the biggest thrills I’ve had in my life.”

Their dark-haired baby boy weighs 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measures 19 inches. The Guthrie couple also have a 6-year-old son, Cody.

“I’d like to take good care of him,” Cody said, while adding they will have their own rooms.

Edmond is producing more babies these days. It took 21 years for the hospital to deliver Raymond Hastings on Jan. 17, 1968, as the 100th baby born there since the first birth unit opened in 1947. Raymond tipped the scales at 8 pounds and measured 22 inches long. Today, Hastings works in the hospital’s materials management department.

“I started thinking it would be nice to have the 100th baby born again,” Hastings said.

Amy said they were looking for a small hospital to have her baby. Dr. Amanda Levine led the team of My Birth Center nursing staff in the delivery.

“It’s very pleasant,” Amy said. “Everyone is very helpful and willing to do anything for you.”

Dr. Brant Buchinger, medical director, said the goal of My Birth Center is to provide not only a quality birthing experience, but also a comfortable, calming one.

“Reaching this milestone so quickly after opening shows not only the need in the community for labor and delivery services, but also the desire for our Edmond families to stay in the city for this tremendous life experience,” Buchinger said. “We celebrate this accomplishment today with the Struchtemeyer family.”
