Construction continues on the Lake Hefner fly-over bridge on the Kilpatrick Turnpike, said Jack Damrill, Public Information Officer for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. The bridge closed Nov. 5 to dismantle and rebuild one of the bridge supports.
Motorists can use the Portland Avenue exit to travel southbound on the Lake Hefner Parkway, Damrill said. More than 8,500 motorists have depended on the bridge on a daily basis, he added.
“Since this turnpike has been open, traffic has increased 10-fold,” Damrill said. “We’ve seen an increase in traffic anywhere from 3-5 percent a year.” Built in 1993, the bridge is evaluated for structural deficiencies twice a year, each year.
Closure of the fly-over bridge is expected to last a total of 90 construction days before the contractor will face penalties, Damrill said. The OTA has incentivized the contractor to reopen the bridge and ramp as quick as possible, he said.
“We have put bonuses in to this portion of the contract in order to push the contractor to reopen the bridge as quick as possible,” said Tim Stewart, OTA deputy director. “We realize the importance of this ramp and bridge to the traveling public and want to minimize delays.”
Manhattan Bridge is responsible for the bridge work and support structures. The cost of this portion of the expansion of the turnpike is about $607,271.89.
Duit/TTK Construction is the general contractor for the current widening project on the Kilpatrick Turnpike. The work will add an additional lane of traffic both eastbound and westbound from Eastern Avenue to MacArthur Blvd. The total widening project cost is $54.821 million.
