Heavy overnight storms dropped enough rain to cause flash flooding in parts of the Oklahoma City metro area, stranding commuters in high water in some flood prone areas.
A flash flood watch remained in effect for numerous counties including Oklahoma, Logan and Cleveland counties in central Oklahoma, according to an advisory issued by the National Weather Service this morning.
Excessive rainfall totals of 1-3 inches with locally higher amounts will fall over areas already saturated by recent heavy rainfall. The heaviest rainfall will occur near the Oklahoma City metro area and points south.
At 8:25 a.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated widespread rainfall of 2-5 inches had fallen Friday morning across central Oklahoma, with numerous reports of flooding in the western portions of Oklahoma City and in Norman, according to the National Weather Service.
At 10:30 a.m., National Weather Service radar indicated light showers in Logan and Kingfisher counties. Moisture was heading back into the Edmond area. No flash flood warnings were in effect for Oklahoma County.
No power outages were currently being reported, according to Edmond Electric’s outage status map.
Flash flooding can lead to road washouts and unexpected sinkholes, according to the National Weather Service. Rivers, creeks and streams may rise out of their banks, flooding nearby homes and businesses.
Never attempt to cross water-covered roadways if you cannot see how deep the water is — turn around, don’t drown, the NWS urges. Monitor weather forecasts and information. Make plans to get to higher ground if flooding occurs.
Showers and storms were expected to end from west to east Friday afternoon as drier air moves in from the northwest. In addition to rain, stronger storms may bring damaging winds up to 60 mph, hail up to half dollars and frequent cloud to ground lightning.
After a break on Saturday there will be a chance for storms again Saturday night through Tuesday night, mainly across northern Oklahoma, the weather service forecasts.
