Edmondites win big in primary races

EDMOND — Edmond residents fared well in Tuesday night’s primary elections. Five city residents won their statewide primaries and one Edmond resident leads by 1 percent of the vote into an August runoff election.

State Sen. Todd Lamb leaped ahead of his competitors for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

Lamb earned 156,807 votes, or 66.84 percent, which was more than enough to send him on to the Nov. 2 general election.

“We feel good,” Lamb said via cell phone from Rep. Mary Fallin’s watch party in Oklahoma City. “We’ve worked hard for 14 months. We’ve met the first goal.”

Lamb’s nearest Republican opponent was John Wright, who garnered 41,169 votes, or 17.55 percent. The other three GOP contenders trailed at 10,514 votes, or 4.48 percent for Bernie Adler, 13,941 votes, or 5.94 percent for Paul F. Nosak and 12,177 votes, or 5.19 percent for Bill Crozier, according to the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Lamb, 38, said he wants to focus his lieutenant governor campaign on bringing Oklahoma together to tackle the tough issues. He noted his rural roots in Enid and his more current experience as an urban legislator representing Edmond in the state Senate.

“I want to bring urban and rural together and bring Democrat and Republican together,” he said.

Lamb said he will continue to focus on putting out a detailed agenda and vision for Oklahoma as he continues to crisscross the state. So far his campaign has hit on the issues of business retention and recruitment, health care reform and worker’s compensation reform.

While Lamb won Tuesday night, his campaign is not over. He said he planned to have a campaign meeting first thing this morning to forge ahead toward Nov. 2, where he will face Democrat Kenneth Corn, 33, of Poteau, and Edmond Independent candidate Richard Prawdzienski, 62.

Edmond Rep. Ken Miller secured his Republican nomination for state treasurer. Miller brought in 145,391 votes, or 63.04 percent, versus Edmond resident and former Woodward Sen. Owen Laughlin’s 85,231 votes, or 36.96 percent.

Miller, 43, will face Midwest City Democrat Stephen E. Covert, 61, on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

Edmond resident and incumbent Dana Murphy sailed to an easy finish Tuesday night in her first re-election campaign for her Corporation Commission seat. Murphy had garnered 158,755 votes, or 69.21 percent, compared with Tod Yeager’s 70,641 votes, or 30.79 percent. Tuesday night’s results put Murphy in for another term as there is no Democrat opponent in this race.

Another Edmond resident, Mark Costello, secured the Republican nomination for Commissioner of Labor. Costello earned 127,389 votes, or 57.06 percent, of the vote against Jason Reese’s 95,857 votes, or 42.94 percent.

Costello, 54, will face incumbent Labor Commissioner Lloyd L. Fields, 52, of Norman in the Nov. 2 general election.

Edmond resident Brian S. Kelly lost his race against Janet Barresi for the GOP nomination for superintendent of public instruction. Barresi had garnered 145,420 votes, or 62.73 percent, compared to Kelly’s 86,410 votes, or 37.27 percent.

On the Democrat side of that race, Susan Paddack won 183,525 votes, or 73.35 percent against Jerry Combrink’s 66,685 votes, or 26.65 percent. Paddack will face off against Barresi in November to see who will replace retiring Schools Superintendent Sandy Garrett.

David Hanigar, another Edmond resident, lost his bid to become the next state auditor and inspector. Hanigar amassed 66,358 votes, or 30.43 percent compared to GOP winner Gary Jones’ 151,685 votes, or 43.95 percent. Jones will move on to the Nov. 2 election to face Democrat Steve Burrage, 57, of Antlers.

Results from Tuesday night are unofficial and will be certified later in the week by the State Election Board.
